• ACCOUNTING | Higher Level | Full Time Accounting is commonly seen as the mathematical side of business and this subject attracts the students who enjoy working with numbers. Not only do students learn the principles of bookkeeping, they will learn how to interpret and analyse these figures. Accounting is a great choice for students considering a career in Finance, Accounting, Corporate Law or Business and Information Systems, to name but a few. Many other third-level courses will also have Accounting modules, such as Law,Law & Business, Management, Hospitality and Commerce. Students taking Accounting tend to have liked the Accounting paper of Business Studies at Junior Certificate level. A good grasp of numerical and computational skills is an advantage.  
  • BIOLOGY | Higher Level | Full Time | Courses Many students are unaware of the many college courses that require a Leaving Certificate Science subject. The vast majority of students in Hewitt College study at least one Science subject with Biology being a popular choice. The course is diverse and covers everything from Cell Biology to the Human Body to Ecology and Plants. It is a subject that requires lots of learning. However, at Hewitt College, most of the course is covered in 5th year, which allows students ample time to revise and reinforce course content. Our students are regularly tested on the material, ensuring that they don’t fall behind. Class examinations and examination paper practice is key to our continued exam success. Biology as an extra subject for students not attending Hewitt College is a very popular option, as it is very achievable to cover the course with one weekly class, particularly for a student beginning in 5th year. As there is no restriction on subject choices at Hewitt College, students that are interested in Science and STEM subjects may choose all or any combination of the following: Agricultural Science, Applied Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics.  
  • BUSINESS | Leaving Cert | Junior Cert | Higher Level | Full Time | Courses Business is a popular option. While it may be helpful to have studied Business Studies at Junior Cert level, it is not necessary. Business is a factual subject that requires lots of learning. At Hewitt College, students sit weekly tests to ensure that the work is covered gradually, allowing for better retention and of course, less stress! As there is no restriction on subject choices at Hewitt College, students that are interested in Business may choose all or any combination of subjects from this grouping, Accounting, Business and Economics.   • CHEMISTRY | Higher Level | Full Time | Courses Chemistry is a very popular option here at Hewitt College, as it opens up a wide range of STEM courses and careers to our students. Chemistry examines mathematical calculations, knowledge of experiments and requires very precise definitions. Our 5th year students will spend two years building up a deep understanding of the principles and applications of Chemistry. Examination papers are used daily in class, ensuring that our students leave with an excellent Leaving Cert Chemistry result, but, just as importantly, with a firm grasp of its science.
  • CONSTRUCTION STUDIES | Higher Level | Full Time Construction Studies is a “hands-on” subject, which involves working with tools and machinery on materials like wood, metals and plastic. It is the study of buildings and the built environment. Examination of the subject has three components; a practical exam, (allocated 25% of the overall marks), a student project (allocated 25% of the overall marks) and a theory-based examination sat in June, as part of the main timetabled Leaving Certificate examinations. The final examination investigates topics such as heat and thermal effects, illumination and substructure/superstructure. This is an excellent subject for a practically-minded student who has a keen interest in buildings. The theory is not complex and relates to examples taken from everyday life. Having studied Woodwork at Junior Certificate level is an advantage but is not necessary. This is a very achievable course to cover in one year. Construction Studies is also a popular choice for students as an extra subject. Complementary Subjects: Art, Design and Communication Graphics, Home Economics (as there is a Home Design elective).
  • DESIGN & COMMUNICATIONS GRAPHICS | Higher Level | Full Time | DCG has taken the place of Technical Graphics at Leaving Certificate. This subject offers students the opportunity to visualise and understand information presented either verbally or graphically. Students will develop problem solving and creative thinking skills and are required to use 2D and 3D graphics. 40% of the coursework is a project, mainly computer-based, using Computer-Aided Design programme Solidworks. The theme of the 2019 assignment was design of an aroma | vapour diffuser. This is an excellent choice for students who have strong visual-spatial skills and interested in Engineering or Technology as a future career choice. Students who have not taken Technical Drawing to Junior Certificate level may initially find the subject difficult as they are lacking the fundamentals of the subject. Complementary subjects : Physics, Applied Maths, Engineering, Technology.
  • ECONOMICS | Higher Level | Full Time Economics is suited to students who have a genuine interest in how the economy works as a whole. It involves topics such as wealth, finance, the recession and the banking sector. Studying Economics gives students a greater understanding of the world in which they live in. In September 2019, a new Economics course was introduced. The new course has a project component worth 20%, which is great news for students. As there is no restriction on subject choices at Hewitt College, students that are interested in Business may choose up to three options from Accounting, Business and Economics or Agricultural Economics. Complementary Subjects: Physics, Applied Maths, Higher Level Maths, Construction.
  • ENGINEERING | Higher Level | Full Time Engineering is a “hands-on” subject, which involves working with metals and studying topics such as mechanical engineering materials, processes and technological applications. Examination of the subject has three components; a practical exam, (allocated 25% of the overall marks), a student project (allocated 25% of the overall marks) and a theory-based examination sat in June, as part of the main timetabled Leaving Certificate examinations. This is an excellent subject for a practically-minded student who has a keen interest in buildings. The theory is not complex and relates to examples taken from everyday life. Having studied Metalwork at Junior Certificate level is an advantage but is not necessary. This is a very achievable course to cover in one year. Engineering is also a popular choice for students as an extra subject. Complementary Subjects: Construction, Design and Communication Graphics, Technology.
  • ENGLISH | Leaving Cert | Junior Cert | Higher & Ordinary Level | Full Time | Courses English is a core subject, required to fulfil entry requirements for college. Higher English can be intensive, due to the extensive nature of the course, which includes poetry, reading comprehension, essay writing and a comparative study of three pieces of literature|film. Written work is assigned and corrected our experienced teachers and State Examination correctors. Complementary subjects: History, Religion, Politics and Society (available from September 2019).
  • FRENCH | Leaving Cert Higher & Ordinary Level | Junior Cert Higher | Full Time | Grinds | Courses French is nationally, by far the most popular choice as a third language with almost 26,000 students choosing French as their foreign language for Leaving Certificate in 2018. We pride ourselves in Hewitt College on the excellence of our modern languages departments. You will be taught by Leaving Certificate textbook author Patricia McGrath, and all full-time students have weekly one-to-one French oral classes with our native-speaking French tutor, Antoine Madiot. In Hewitt College, there is no blocking of subjects, and students may study any or a combination of French, German and Spanish. Japanese and Italian may also be facilitated on a private basis.    
  • GEOGRAPHY | Leaving Cert Higher Level | Full Time | Courses Geography is a popular option for students of Hewitt College. This is a wide course, as in addition to the core components of Physical Environment and Regional Geography, one elective unit must be covered. Our Geography teacher at Hewitt College, Dr. Eleanor Solon, is a Leaving Certificate textbook author. The fieldwork component of the course is worth 20% of the overall examination. This is generally completed in October to allow students ample time to write up their fieldwork journals. Complementary subjects : Agricultural Science, History.
  • GERMAN | Leaving Cert Higher Level | Junior Cert Higher Level | Full Time | Grinds | Courses German is the second most popular European language, and is growing in popularity. Like French, the examination consists of an oral exam, an aural section and a written examination. German is a popular choice at Hewitt College and our students perform at the highest level in Leaving Certificate. In Hewitt College, there is no blocking of subjects, and students may study any or a combination of French, German and Spanish. Japanese and Italian may also be facilitated on a private basis.
